The diff cover was leaking so I removed the cover and preparing to reinstall with some black RTV.
Moving Along
Soo.....
I am having trouble identifying my rear axle on my Jeep because some of the serial numbers have rusted out. This is a result of the Jeep being bought out of Michigan. This becomes a problem when purchasing some items such as brake pads.

Well, by looking at the bolt pattern, you can tell its either a Dana 44 or a Dana 60. To narrow it down further, you can look at the original ebay auction where it said "DANA 44 FRONT AND REAR."
I don't trust what people post on ebay. The guy I bought it from didn't even have the Jeep for more than four months.
To narrow it down even further not all Dana 44's have the same front and rear brakes or even the same axle width for that matter.
Nor do 9" axles, but that doesnt make them 9" axles.
It's a specificity problem. Telling him it's a Dana axle is technically accurate as well, but clearly it also doesn't narrow it down to the point that's necessary.
"Dana" is accurate and not specific enough. "Dana 44" is accurate and not specific enough. "Dana 44 which came with drums XYZ" may be specific enough to identify which brake shoes are necessary.
Of course, it's all moot since once Phil's done with it, this axle should be a "Dana 44 plated in chrome and covered with Swarovski crystals."
Thats it! I'm buying Swarovski crystal bumper nuts.
