Belinda and I are looking at a new digital camera to replace our aging our Pentax Optio 60 before we go to Florida. I don't have any idea were to start.
I like my Canon powershot a lot. It has a manual mode that makes shooting car parts easy, but it sucks for lugging around because it's a little too bulky to fit in my pocket.

www.dpreview.com is great once you have a rough idea what you're looking for.
The Sonys are great cameras, but you're saddled with crappy MemoryStick cards.
I've always liked the Optio S series (much better than the other Optios). Those may be a good place to start.
